MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota men's basketball team announced Tuesday that former Drake forward Joey King has officially signed a tender to play for the Gophers.

King, an Eagan native, played his freshman year at Drake last season and averaged 6.9 points, 2.0 rebounds and 0.9 assists per game for the Bulldogs. He played his high school basketball at Eastview, where he averaged 23.9 points and six rebounds as a senior.

The 6-foot-9 King joins Daquein McNeil, Deandre Mathieu and Malik Smith in new head coach Richard Pitino's first recruiting class.

"Joey showed last season that he is an inside player that can also step out and hit the three-point shot," Pitino said in a statement. "We want to play an up-tempo style of basketball so to have a versatile player with his size is going to be a luxury."

King may be eligible to play for Minnesota next season. He is reportedly moved closer to home to be near an ailing family member and is seeking a waiver to be eligible to play in the 2013-14 season.
