Sage Rosenfels has been out of the NFL since he was released by the Minnesota Vikings before last season and now he's officially announced his retirement. Rosenfels, who spent two seasons as a backup in Minnesota sandwiched around a year with the New York Giants made the announcement on his Facebook page. Rosenfels, 35, was in training camp with the Vikings last season after spending the 2011 season as a backup, but Rosenfels was cut as Minnesota decided to go with Joe Webb as the backup to Christian Ponder and made young McLeod Bethel-Thompson the third quarterback. Rosenfels, who played 10 seasons in the NFL with four teams, didn't throw a pass his final three seasons in the NFL and seemed to understand his career was over after being unable to find another team. "I always knew the day would come," Rosenfels wrote on his Facebook page. "I just didn't think I'd be 35 when it finally happened. I will soon be turning in my paperwork to the NFL and formally retiring after a 12 year career. Like most NFL players, I wish I could have played a couple more seasons, but usually the league is done with you before you are done with it." Rosenfels wrote a long letter posted on his Facebook page, thanking his many coaches, family and friends for their support. He started 12 games in his career, getting the most action with the Houston Texans as a backup to Matt Schaub in 2007 and 2008. He started 10 games over the two seasons, helping the team to a 6-4 record. His best season was 2007, when he played in nine games and starting five, passing for 1,684 yards, 15 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Rosenfels, a fourth-round draft choice by the Washington Redskins in 2001 out of Iowa State, finished his career with a 62.5 completion percentage and 81.2 quarterback rating. "It definitely was a roller coaster ride with many ups and downs and not a lot of years where I felt comfortable with my standing on a team," Rosenfels wrote on Facebook. "A dozen years of battling every day to make it another year and to prove myself against some of the best athletes in the world."
