The Cowboys entered Week 7 in a 2-3 hole. With games against the Giants, Falcons and Eagles lined up for the next three weeks, a victory against a one-win Panthers team was badly needed. A loss would put their hopes of reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2009 in serious jeopardy.
What would Jerry Jones do to get his team ready to play? Perhaps a motivational speaker? Maybe have a former Cowboys player or coach talk to the team?
Well, Jones had someone address the team. But surprisingly, it was a person that once coached their bitter rival.
Former Washington Redskins coach Joe Gibbs was his choice. The three-time Super Bowl champion addressed the Cowboys Saturday at their team hotel during a chapel session.
"He was talking about some of his low times and he was talking about some of the coaching errors, now he wasn't directing it to the team at all relative to our criticism regarding our sideline coaching decision, but he talked about a couple of them that bit him," Jones explained. "When you heard that, I know the players told me that when they see Joe Gibbs talking about making a few bad decisions on the sideline they know anybody could."
It sounds odd that Jones wanted a former coach to speak to his team about coaching mistakes. Regardless, the Cowboys, who topped the Panthers 19-14, are 1-0 following speeches from Gibbs.
