Former University of Miami defensive back JoJo Nicolas remains in critical condition from injuries sustained in an early Tuesday morning car crash.

According to officials, Nicolas rear-ended his gray Lexus into the back of a tractor trailer just after 5 a.m. while it was stopped at a light. His car was underneath it on the westbound lanes of MacArthur causeway, shutting down traffic.

Nicolas, who turns 25 on March 3, was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center.

The 6-1, 200 pounder played 47 games for the Hurricanes from 2007-11, recording 112 tackles (4.5 for a loss), a fumble recovery for a touchdown and three interceptions. In 2011, he won the Melching Leadership Award.

After going undrafted in 2012, the New York Giants signed Nicolas to a free-agent contract with an invitation to training camp. He did not play in the NFL.
