CINCINNATI - Former University of Cincinnati football standout Nick Shundich (1930-2013) passed away on July 12, 2013, at the age of 82.
Shundich was a four-year member of the football team from 1948-51, a mainstay on the line, mostly at defensive tackle. As a senior, Shundich was the co-captain of the Sid Gillman-coached team that went 10-1 in 1951. During his three years on the varsity team, the Bearcats tallied a 25-9 record, a pair of Mid-American Conference Championships and two bowl games, the 1949 Glass Bowl and 1950 Sun Bowl.
He earned degrees from UC in 1952 (BA, economics) and 1957 (BS, education), followed by a master’s degree in 1959 (MS, education).
Shundich, a member of Sigma Sigma Honor Fraternity and UCATS, later served in Korea as a member of the U.S. Army and was inducted into the James P. Kelly UC Athletics Hall of Fame in 1988. He retired from Cincinnati banking in 1993, after a successful career as a vice president and trust officer.
The native of Wilmerding, Pa. is survived by his wife Rosella, son Steven, daughters Lorri, Rebecca and Jennifer, son-in-law John and grandchildren Sean and Erin.
A memorial service will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Terrace Park on Thursday, July 18 at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Peaslee Neighborhood Center through St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 100 Miami Avenue, Terrace Park, OH 45174.
