TEMPE, Ariz. -- Former Arizona State football coach Bob Owens died Monday at the age of 77 due to complications from cancer.

Owens served as interim head coach at ASU for the final seven games of the 1979 season, following legendary coach Frank Kush's dismissal. Under Owens, the Sun Devils went 3-4. Owens led the program at a controversial time, with the fan base unhappy over Kush's dismissal. Daryl Rogers took over at the start of the 1980 season.

Owens later spent time at UNLV as an assistant coach from 1982-1984. He returned to his alma mater, Pasadena Community College, in 1991 as an assistant coach and served 10 seasons there before retiring from coaching.
