Florida State will play host to Notre Dame in football in the 2014 season, Atlantic Coast Conference commissioner John Swofford announced on Friday.
Swofford informed Florida State officials that the game was set for 2014, but a date has not been set. Notre Dame will remain a football and hockey independent, but has made a deal to play five football games annually against ACC schools.
It’s not clear what other schools Notre Dame will play as part of the deal, which begins in 2014.
The teams last played in the 2011 Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando. Florida State rallied for two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to defeat Notre Dame 18-14.
But the teams have not had a regular-season matchup since 2003, when Florida State routed the Irish 37-0 in South Bend, Ind.
The two schools have a storied past, including a “Game of the Century” in 1993 when the No. 2 Fighting Irish defeated No. 1 Florida State 31-24 in South Bend. The Seminoles have a 5-2 edge in the series.
Arranging a matchup in 2014 with Notre Dame gives Florida State an impressive home schedule that also includes Florida and Clemson. The Seminoles would travel to Miami and also play Oklahoma State at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, to open the 2014 season, a game in which Florida State will earn a $3.5 million guarantee.
Florida State has also booked a home-and-home contract with Boise State in 2019 and 2020.
