DETROIT -- Even the veteran baseball writers in the Comerica Park press box watching the Tigers play the Chicago White Sox had never witnessed anything like it.

Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski finished his phone call after completing his blockbuster trade for Tampa Bay ace David Price right before the non-waiver deadline.

Smyly, who started Thursday, was already out of the game, but Jackson was in center field.

With one out in the seventh inning, Ausmus came out to the field to tell home-plate umpire Tim Welke that he was taking Jackson out and putting Rajai Davis in center field.

Trades have been made during games before but no one could recall seeing a player taken out in the middle of an inning.

Jackson hugged Davis and third baseman Nick Castellanos while coming off the field. Then the rest of the Tigers embraced him in the dugout.

Jackson will be reunited with Seattle Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon, who was in Detroit from 2006-2013.

There's a chance that outfield Ezequiel Carrera could be brought up from Triple-A Toledo, where he's batting .307 with six home runs and 41 RBI in 97 games.
