ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — If you’ve had too much to drink, whatever you do, avoid the mascot.

One Massachusetts man learned the lesson the hard way Tuesday night at Tropicana Field during a game between the Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox. According to St. Petersburg police, as reported by the Tampa Bay Times, Trevor James Martin reached across a railing and snagged Raymond, the Rays mascot, by the neck. Martin, from a Boston suburb, had some obvious issues: He smelled of alcohol, had trouble standing and slurred his words.

Martin, 27, informed police that he drank two beers during the Red Sox’s 2-0 victory, and he faces a misdemeanor charge of disorderly intoxication. Early Wednesday, Martin was released from Pinellas County Jail after paying a $100 bond.

Luckily for Martin, the person inside the mascot suit declined to press charges. The Rays had no comment.

Too much of a good time? Avoid the temptation: Hands off the mascot.
