Ericsson out 10-14 days with broken finger

DETROIT -- And then there were six -- as in six straight games the Red Wings have lost a player to injury.

Tuesday night it was defenseman Jonathan Ericsson's turn and coach Mike Babcock said it's not good news.

"We get someone hurt every day and they never come back," Babcock said. "I guess he's out for a bit. The hand specialist is looking at him. He's got a broken finger. In the old days you just taped that to another one and you just keep playing."

General manager Ken Holland said they're considering surgery Wednesday.

"They put a screw in. It's the top of a finger, I don't know which one," Holland said. "They put a screw in to keep everything in line, and then it would be when he can handle pain. But I would say to you right now he's out minimum of 10 days to two weeks."

Ericsson did not play the final two shifts of the second period. Early in the third, the Wings announced Ericsson had an upper-body injury and would not return.

Brendan Smith, who had been moved to left wing in Abdelkader's absence, returned to play defense when Ericsson left.

Holland said the Wings would not recall yet another player from Grand Rapids as they have six healthy defensemen in Brendan Smith, Jakub Kindl, Brian Lashoff, Kyle Quincey, Niklas Kronwall and Danny DeKeyser.

"It's tough," goaltender Jimmy Howard said. "He's one of our top D-men, he plays against the opposing team's top lines every single night. You kind of just shake your head, hopefully we don't lose another guy. Because now it's just getting to be mind boggling."
