It might not be much comfort to Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkader, but Deryk Engelland has been suspended.
Engelland, a Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman, caught Abdelkader in the chin with his shoulder in Saturday night's game at Joe Louis Arena.
Engelland was given a 5-minute match penalty for a hit to the head. He had an in-person hearing with the league Wednesday.
The NHL department of player safety released a video explaining why they were suspending Engelland for five games.
Abdelkader told mlive.com that he's feeling better and hopes to get back before the Christmas break.
"I'm working my way back," Abdelkader told mlive.com. "It's a process. As long as I have no setbacks we'll keep building it each day."
Engelland had a previous three-game suspension for a hit to the head, so that's why he received two more games this time.
Engelland will forfeit $14,529.90 of his salary, which goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
In other news, Wings general manager Ken Holland said defenseman Kyle Quincey will not be suspended for his hit on Anaheim's Ryan Getzlaf Tuesday night.
Quincey received a 5-minute boarding penalty and game misconduct for hitting Getzlaf. Getzlaf was bloodied and required stitches before returning.
"I watched it after," Getzlaf said after the game. "I was in tight -- I have to take some of the responsibility for putting myself in that position -- and he crosschecked me in the back.
"I was kind of trying to stop and hit the puck, and he made a play with his stick horizontal to the back, which is something you don't do in this league right now."
Quincey told Mlive.com that he and Getzlaf are friends and that he spoke to him after the game.
