Edwards takes umbrage with ex-flame's book

FORT WORTH, Texas — Sprint Cup driver Carl Edwards has some issues with how he's portrayed in a former girlfriend's book but isn't sure what he can do about it.
Edwards started dating Amanda Beard in 2005, and the year they spent together is addressed in the former Olympic swimmer's new book, "In the Water They Can't See You Cry."
According to the book, Beard had issues with Edwards' controlling personality as well as the NASCAR community.
Edwards was asked Friday if he would dispute Beard's assessment.
"Absolutely, but I wouldn't know where to start," he said at Texas Motor Speedway. "I don't know if I am supposed to talk about the psychology of feelings and opinions when you have a relationship that doesn't work out, or if I am supposed to talk about the strategies to sell books or whatever.
"To be honest with you guys, it is just weird. I don't know how to address things that I don't even remember happening. That is tough. It is pretty far ... out of left field for me."
Edwards and Beard have since married others and have had children with their respective spouses.
Edwards said he wasn't aware of the other issues Beard describes in the book, such as cutting herself and battles with bulimia, drugs and alcohol.
Nor did he expect to be portrayed as he is in the book, which he knew she was planning to write.
Yet, Edwards didn't sound like he held any grudges toward Beard. In fact, he said the conversations he has had with her since they broke up in 2006 have been good.
"I guess all I can say is that I considered us friends and I didn't realize that she had all those problems," Edwards said. "I would have done anything in the world to have helped her with those. As always, regardless of what she writes in her books and things like that, if she ever needs something from me, I would be there to help her out. I don't know what else to say about that."
