Ducks sign Maroon to two-year extension

On the eve of two home games in three nights against the rival Detroit Red Wings, the Ducks on Thursday secured big-bodied left wing Patrick Maroon with a two-year, $1.15-million contract extension.

Maroon, 24, has two goals in 11 games this season with the Ducks after scoring 17 goals in 51 games at minor league Norfolk (Va.).

The 6-foot-3, 230-pound player has impressed by complementing his brawn (10 penalty minutes) with graceful puck handling and an eye for the net. He scored his first goal Feb. 16 against Nashville's Pekka Rinne and tied the score in an eventual 2-1 win at Minnesota on March 12.

Dentist appointment
While others around him skated into position in the final minutes of Wednesday's 4-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks, Ducks center Andrew Cogliano had fallen to the ice, holding his mouth.

What happened? The four officials wondered the same thing. No penalty was called.

A television replay showed Chicago left wing Brandon Bollig smashing his stick into Cogliano's mouth. Cogliano visited the dentist Thursday to deal with his two lost front teeth.

Ducks Coach Bruce Boudreau was incredulous after the game that the incident was missed, adding he thought Blackhawks star Patrick Kane also had "used his stick like a tomahawk."

"These are penalties," Boudreau said.

Duck tales
•The Detroit game marks the return of Ducks star Corey Perry from a four-game suspension for a hit to the head of Minnesota's Jason Zucker on March 12. He has nine goals and 15 assists this season, and four goals in his last five games.

•Because of the altered post-lockout NHL schedule, the Ducks' back-to-back home games against the Red Wings mark the second time that has happened in team history. Dallas played consecutive games at Honda Center on Nov. 13 and Nov. 16, 2005.

•Because he wasn't playing in Anaheim, the Ducks reassigned left wing Brandon McMillan to minor league Norfolk.
