Dibaba runs 3rd-fastest women's 5K at Carlsbad, 14:48

CARLSBAD, Calif. (AP) Genzebe Dibaba of Ethiopia ran the third-fastest women's 5,000 meters ever at 14 minutes, 48 seconds in the Carlsbad 5000 on Sunday.

Dibaba dominated the women's field, finishing 25 seconds ahead of Ethiopia's Gelete Burka (15:13). Wude Yimer of Ethiopia was third in 15:18.

''It was fast running for me today,'' Dibaba said through a translator. ''But I did not go out fast enough.''

She missed the world record by 2 seconds.

The top American woman was Sarah Brown of Solana Beach, California, who was eighth in 15:48.

Lawi Lalang of Kenya was the overall winner in 13:32. Wilson Too of Kenya was second in 13:29 and Bernard Lagat of Tucson, Arizona, was third in 13:41.
