Diamondbacks claim reliever Sweeney off waivers

The Arizona Diamondbacks announced Wednesday that they claimed right-handed pitcher Brian Sweeney off waivers from the Seattle Mariners.

Sweeney, 36, went 1-2 with a 3.16 ERA (13 earned runs in 37 innings), .239 opponents batting average (33 for 138), six walks and 14 strikeouts in 24 relief appearances for the Mariners. He signed as a minor league free agent on April 16 and opened the season at Triple-A Tacoma.

Over parts of four seasons in the majors with the Mariners (2003 and 2010) and Padres (2004 and 2006), he is 4-2 with two saves, a 3.38 ERA (44 ER in 117 IP), .254 opponents batting average (113 for 445), 25 walks and 54 strikeouts in 73 games.
