Desert Vista, Hamilton, Notre Dame, South Mountain claim soccer state titles


Desert Vista defeated Hamilton on penalty kicks Saturday after neither team scored in 80 minutes of regulation and 30 minutes of overtime periods to capture its first state championship in 11 years.
The Thunder outscored the Huskies 5-3 on penalty kicks at Campo Verde High School in Gilbert.
Hamilton scored twice in the final 10 minutes to come away with a 2-1 victory over Gilbert and the state championship at Campo Verde.

Channing Chasten scored off a rebound in the 71st minute and Nick Mootz registered the game winner 76th minute to give the Huskies their second title as they played in the championship match for the fifth time in seven years.
Angel Jimenez's goal in the 53rd minute and a penalty kick in the 79th minute by Bryan Medina gave No. 7 South Mountain a 2-0 victory over No. 9 Sunnyslope at Campo Verde.
The title was the first for the program and the first for South Mountain since its boys basketball team won the 5A-II championship in 2006.
Notre Dame Prep beat Salpointe Catholic 1-0 to win the Division II championship at Campo Verde.
