Defensive end Jamal Marcus has left the Ohio State football program.

A native of Durham, North Carolina, Marcus had played two seasons at Ohio State, one at linebacker and one at defensive end. He made his only start in last January's Orange Bowl following the suspension of Noah Spence but hadn't participated in the spring due to academic issues.

Ohio State did not release a statement, but a team spokesman confirmed a Columbus Dispatch report that said the parting was mutual and that Marcus was not kicked off the team.

His departure leaves the Buckeyes with 82 scholarship players, the limit due to sanctions from the 2010-11 memorabilia scandal. The Buckeyes return to an 85 scholarship limit in 2015.
