It wasn't that Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland didn't try to contact Dansby personally before the news broke, but the 10-year veteran told Miami sports radio host Sid Rosenberg that he missed the call.
When he finally saw that his phone was blowing up, he immediately called Ireland to find out what was going on.
In the interview, Dansby, who was signed through 2014, told Rosenberg he was surprised by the move.
"Not one indication, not a hint, not anything," said Dansby, who led the Dolphins with 134 combined tackles (101 solo) in 2012. "It was a shock to me just like it was a shock to everybody else. It came out of left field. I wasn't expecting it until I got to the option year.
"The organization wanted to go in a different direction. That's business."
Dansby's father, Samuel Dansby, told FOX Sports Florida teams in the mix to sign Dansby include the New York Giants, Atlanta and Baltimore, but that it's "still early" in the process.
On the first day that teams were allowed to start signing free agents, the Dolphins were very active, agreeing to deals with Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace, Ravens linebacker Dannell Ellerbe and Raiders linebacker Philip Wheeler.
With a pair of new linebackers in the fold, the Dolphins cut ties with Dansby as well as fellow starter Kevin Burnett.
