D-backs wrap up draft with 17 pitchers among 41 picks

PHOENIX -- The Diamondbacks wrapped up the 2017 MLB Draft on Wednesday with 30 more selections, giving them 41 total picks for the three days.
The positional breakdown was: 17 pitchers (15 right-handed, two left-handed), 12 infielders, seven outfielders and five catchers. Thirty-one of the draftees were from college programs, and 10 were out of high school.
Their third-day selections included right-handed pitcher Boyd Vander Kooi of Skyline High School in Mesa in the 36th round. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound Vander Kooi was the Gatorade Arizona Palyer of the Year after going 6-1 with a 1.49 ERA as a pitcher and hitting .512 with six home runs. He is an ASU commit.
Two other third-day picks have Arizona connections. Outfielder Ernie De La Trinidad (19th round) attended Mountain Pointe High School, the University of Arizona and Central Arizona College before transferring to UNLV. Left-handed pitcher Tarik Skubal (29th round) is a native of Kingman who led Kingman Academy to two state titles before moving on to Seattle University.
Right-handed pitcher Cole Percival, taken in the 31st round out of Riverside Poly High School in California, is the son of former major league pitcher Troy Percival, now head coach at UC Riverside.
Shortstop Nathan Reynolds (39th round) is the nephew of former major league infielder Harold Reynolds and D-backs area scout Donnie Reynolds.
