D-backs select pitcher Mateo from Cubs in Rule 5 draft

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. --The Arizona Diamondbacks selected right-handed pitcher Marcos Mateo of the Chicago Cubs organization in the Major League phase of the Rule 5 Draft on Thursday.

In the Triple-A phase, the Diamondbacks selected right-handed pitcher Michael Lee (Braves) and left-handed pitcher Hector Hernandez (Cardinals).

Mateo, 29, was 2-0 with 1 save and a 1.74 ERA in 31 innings last season at three-minor-league levels (Triple A, Double A and Rookie League). He is currently pitching with Estrellas de Oriente in the Dominican Winter League and is 3-0 with nine saves and a 0.93 ERA.

The 6-foot-1, 220-pounder was 1-3 with a 5.04 ERA in 44 relief appearances with the Cubs in 2010-11. He  missed the entire 2012 season and part of 2013 due to Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.

Lee, 27, was 9-8 with a 3.77 ERA in 26 games at the Triple-A and Double-A levels. Hernandez, 22, was 8-6 with a 3.55 ERA in 22 games at the Single-A level.
