D-backs 8, Padres 6
Game recap: The D-backs built a quick lead with three runs in the first inning and eventually took an 8-6 win with the help of five doubles from the top four hitters in the starting lineup. The big offensive showing helped the D-backs overcome a rough day from their pitching staff.
Starting in place of Bronson Arroyo, who was scratched with back stiffness, Randall Delgado was touched up two home runs and four runs. Relievers J.J. Putz and Addison Reed also allowed run a run each.
The Padres tied it in the sixth before second baseman Aaron Hill and first baseman Paul Goldschmidt each doubled in a run in the seventh to give the D-backs a lead again. The lead held up the rest of the way.
Hitting notes: Center fielder A.J. Pollock led off the game with a double to the wall in left field and scored shortly after on a Martin Prado double. Mark Trumbo then walked to load the bases, and outfielder Matt Tuiasosopo drove in two runs on a single. Tuiasosopo also drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Pollock finished the day 3 for 4 with two doubles and a RBI while Prado went 3 for 4 with a RBI. Prado is hitting .667 in Cactus League play.
Pitching notes: After a clean first inning, Delgado gave up a lead off home run to Padres outfielder Carlos Quentin on a 3-0 fastball. Delgado finished with 3 2/3 innings of work and allowed four runs on five hits and two strikeouts. He gave up a double and a home run in the third inning and put a man on in the fourth before exiting.
"I was feeling pretty good," Delgado said. "There were a couple bad pitches, maybe with command or something, but I felt great."
Matt Bolsinger followed Delgado with 1 1/3 scoreless innings before Addision Reed gave up a run on a hit and a walk in the sixth inning before J.J. Putz gave up a run on two hits in the seventh. David Hernandez and Josh Collmenter worked scoreless innings to close out the game.
Short hops: With Gibson looking to get plentiful at-bats for competing shortstops Didi Gregorius and Chris Owings, both entered Tuesday's game in the fifth inning, with Owings at second base. ... Putz was held out of a scheduled appearance Monday so he could work on a mechanical tweak and instead pitched Tuesday. The issue, Putz said, was one of timing and direction to the plate. "When you're timing's off you may be good for two or three and then two or three are up (high)," Putz said. "When your timing's not consistent it's just hard to repeat." ... Catcher Tuffy Gosewisch (calf) was unavailable again Tuesday but hoped to do more during workouts. He'll likely remain out for at least a few more days. ... When the D-backs arrived in Peoria on Tuesday, they got a visit from an old friend. Former D-back Willie Bloomquist, now with the Mariners (who share Peoria Sports Complex with the Padres), stopped into the visiting clubhouse to say hello.
