D-backs add Drury, four others to roster

PHOENIX -- The Arizona Diamondbacks took care of some necessary business Thursday by adding infielder Brandon Drury and four others to set their 40-man roster.
Drury, outfielder Socrates Brito, left-hander Will Locante and right-handers Kevin Munson and A.J. Schugel were added to the roster, a procedural move that keeps them with the D-backs rather than expose them to the Rule 5 draft at the winter meetings.
Right-handers Mike Bolsinger and Charles Brewer were taken off the roster and designated for assignment.
Drury, a third baseman, has 93 doubles in the past two seasons -- 51 at Class-A South Bend in 2013, and 42 at High-A Visalia and Double-A Mobile last season, ranking first in the minors in 2013 and fifth last year. Drury played some second base in the Arizona Fall League and is expected to play more there in the minor leagues this season with Jake Lamb ahead of him at third.
Baseball America rated Brito as the D-backs' best athlete entering the 2014 season. He hit .293 with 10 home runs, 62 RBI and 38 stolen bases at Visalia last year.
Locante, an 11th-round draft pick in 2011, was 3-0 with a 1.53 ERA at South Bend and was a Midwest League All-Star before being promoted to Visalia in the postseason.
Munson averaged 11.84 strikeouts per nine innings while going 4-3 with a 2.60 ERA at Triple-A Reno.
Schugel was 6-4 with a 3.47 ERA at Mobile and was named to the Southern League midseason All-Star team.
Bolsinger made 10 appearances and nine starts with the D-backs last season, earning a mid-April call-up from Reno when starters Trevor Cahill and Randall Delgado struggled early. He was 1-6 with a 5.50 ERA and 1.59 WHIP.
Brewer, a Scottsdale native, pitched in four games in relief for the D-backs in 2013. He was 11-12 with a 4.46 ERA in 2014, spending most of the season in Reno.
