Cueto, Bailey ready to throw innings for Reds

The Reds have a plan set out for rehabbing right-handers Johnny Cueto and Homer Bailey that points to both returning right around the end of April.

Cueto and Bailey remained in Arizona Sunday after the Reds' 10-8 loss to the Diamondbacks. Each will pitch at the club's complex in Goodyear at an extended spring training game this week.

Cueto will throw two innings Monday at Goodyear. He's then scheduled to throw for Louisville April 16, 21 and 26.

Bailey will throw three innings Tuesday at Goodyear. He's then scheduled to throw for Louisville April 17 and 22. He'll throw again April 27, but that could be for the Reds.

"Homer's a little ahead of Johnny because he went out later," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "We'll make a decision on the 27th. He could be ready or he might need another one."

Cueto and Bailey were slotted in the No. 3 and 4 position in the starting rotation. But Cueto had to be shut down with shoulder inflammation on March 16. Bailey went out with shoulder impingement about a week later.

NOTES, QUOTES

--3B Scott Rolen was in the lineup Sunday after playing Saturday. Reds day. He got a lot of Sunday day games off last year. Reds manager Dusty Baker's plan is to start Rolen about 120 games. That usually means Sundays off. "It just depends how consecutive days, whether we have off days in there, the time of game is important," Baker said.

--1B Joey Votto tied a career high with four hits Sunday. Votto has hits in eight of the Reds' nine games. He went 0-for-1 with a walk in the other game. He had a .455 average after Sunday.

--RF Jay Bruce was dropped to seventh in the lineup Sunday. He is hitting .235 with 14 strikeouts in 34 at-bats. "With the left-hander, we've got some guys who hit (Joe) Saunders pretty good," Baker said. "(Edgar) Renteria hits him pretty good. Bruce hits him well. But he's kind of in-between now."

--LF Jonny Gomes walked for the 12th time Sunday. He didn't walk last year until May 28 -- the 49th game of the year. Gomes also hit a two-run homer.

--RHP Nick Masset took his second loss in four games Sunday. The four runs Masset allowed put his ERA at 11.25. He finished last April at 11.32.

BY THE NUMBERS: 2 –- Errors in Sunday's game after making two errors in the first eight games.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Five runs should be enough. I didn't make it enough." -- RHP Mike Leake, after blowing a 5-0 lead Sunday.
