The Coyotes on Friday assigned defenseman Chris Summers to Portland of the American Hockey League and recalled forward Brandon Yip.
With veteran Rostislav Klesla returning from injured reserve Friday, the Coyotes had nine defensemen on the roster, and Summers was the odd man out. He cleared waivers in order to be assigned to Portland. The 6-foot-2, 209-pounder has appeared in 29 career games with the Coyotes, totaling three assists.
The 28-year-old Yip had three goals and five assists in 34 games with the Predators last season before signing a two-way deal with the Coyotes. In 172 career NHL games, the 6-foot-1, 198-pound Yip has 29 goals and 27 assists.
