Cowboys to keep informal 'pitch count' on Romo

The Cowboys will keep an informal "pitch count" on quarterback Tony Romo's throws in training, coach Jason Garrett said Saturday.

Romo did not participate in any offseason work after having surgery in April to remove a cyst on his back.

Romo, who has been working out on his own to stay in shape, was cleared to return to practice at the start of training camp. However, Garrett said the Cowboys will make sure he doesn't do too much, too soon.

"I don't think it will be significant," Garrett said Saturday in Oxnard, Calif. "He's been throwing regularly for the last month or so. He feels good, but we'll certainly watch that when camp starts and just make sure he's getting the right pitch count as we go."

Later, in comments published by The Dallas Morning News, Garrett clarified that an actual pitch count won't be kept.

"It's more communication, ‘How you feeling?' And you also look at the ball," Garrett said. "Did the ball look a little dead or tired? But mostly it's communication with him and how he's feeling. We'll all get a sense for that. We'll communicate about that, really, each and every day and come up with our plan."

Translation: Some lucky ball boy will get to chart every one of Romo's throws. Bank on it.
