IRVING, Texas — We were speaking on Thursday afternoon with the agent for new Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove, hoping to speak directly to Hargrove, when the agent informed us that his client was indeed at Valley Ranch signing a one-year deal but could not be contacted because Hargrove doesn’t carry a cellphone.
He doesn’t have a phone. But almost as unusually, Anthony Hargrove does have a job.
Hargrove was with Green Bay last spring but ended up missing the season while also serving the eight-game suspension he received from the NFL for his alleged involvement in the New Orleans Saints’ bounty scandal. Hargrove, 29, played with Seattle in 2011, with the Saints in 2009 and 2010 (helping them win a Super Bowl) and with the Bills and the Rams before that.
Hargrove was suspended for the 2008 season due to substance abuse.
Hargrove was a third-round draft pick of St. Louis in 2004. At 6-3 and 290, he has played defensive end and tackle. We’re told the Cowboys might envision him at end, but we note that Warren Sapp — the model for the 3-technique defensive tackle new Dallas defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin would like to employ — thinks Hargrove is a candidate for that job.
We’ll pencil Hargrove in as a versatile backup behind a line that now features Jay Ratliff and Jason Hatcher at the tackles and DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer at the ends.
