IRVING, Texas – Terrance Williams understands he has to earn Tony Romo's trust if the rookie wide receiver wants to become a significant part of the Dallas Cowboys offense.
During the Cowboys' lone offensive series of the first quarter on Saturday, Romo had Williams wide open on a third-and-1 toss. But the ball sailed over the 6-2 wide receiver’s head and fell incomplete.
It appeared that the veteran quarterback was at fault. But Williams took the blame for running the incorrect route on Monday.
"He pointed a safety out and I was just too focused on the play that he called instead of doing the check down," Williams said. "I just have to continue keep learning how he calls things and just use my eyes more and just have common sense."
Cowboys coach Jason Garrett didn’t call out Williams when he was asked during his Monday press conference about the missed opportunity at a possible touchdown.
Garrett said Williams "did a pretty good job running the route."
"There was a communication thing we’ve got to get cleaned up," Garrett said. "That’s also on us as coaches. But the actual route that he ran was certainly run the right way."
Williams, a third-round pick, was making his NFL debut after missing the first two preseason games with a concussion.
