For the first time since Tony Romo became a father on Monday, the Cowboys quarterback publicly spoke about his new son, Hawkins Crawford Romo.

"It's been fantastic," Romo told "The Ben & Skin Show" on KESN-FM 103.3 in Dallas on Thursday. "You hear about it from your family and friends, but until you experience it, you really can’t put into words how it makes you feel. It's just one of those things that for me, you can just tell that there’s a God. It just really shows you all the complexities of it. There's such a sense of responsibility that it just overwhelms you. It's been a really, really great week. I'm one of those proud papas already."

Having the birth occur during the NFL offseason worked out perfectly for Romo, who joked that, "Football is so important that I just make sure the rest of the stuff happens at the right time."

"I think the reality of it is that it happened this way and we got lucky," Romo added. "For me, it does make it a lot easier that it’s going to be in the offseason. I have a great wife, and she makes a lot of things very easy on me. If you pick a good one, I think the process goes a lot easier. I'm a dad that wants to be there to take care of a lot of things and be a part of everything. It's going to be fun and enjoyable. It helps that it was in the offseason, but it would've been fine no matter when it was, though."

Romo's wife, Candice Crawford, a former Miss Missouri and local TV reporter, delivered her 8-pound, 8-ounce son late Monday afternoon at a Dallas hospital.
