SYDNEY (AP) Quade Cooper has joined Australia's rugby sevens program and will be available for selection for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, where the condensed version of the sport will make its debut.
The Australian Rugby Union announced Friday that Cooper will be released by his French club, Toulon, for the Sydney, Paris and London stages of the sevens world series.
An attacking flyhalf, Cooper has 58 test caps for the Wallabies and has played at two World Cups. The Australians finished third in 2011 and were runners-up in 2015.
Cooper says, ''As a rugby player growing up you never think you'll have the chance to play at an Olympics, so I'll be doing everything I can to make the squad.''
