NEW YORK (AP) The historic 1972 chess match between American Bobby Fischer and Soviet champ Boris Spassky was as much about Cold War politics as it was about pawns and bishops.
Now the chess board from the ''Match of the Century'' that made Fischer the world champion is scheduled for auction in New York City on Friday. Heritage Auctions has set an opening bid of $75,000.
The board was used in games 7 through 21 at the championship in Reykjavik (RAY'-kyuh-vik). It replaced a stone board used earlier in the tournament that now resides in the National Museum of Iceland.
The owner was identified only as a New York collector.
The auction coincides with the current World Chess Championship matches that began last week in New York and end later this month.
