Cornerback Rashean Mathis has reached an agreement on a one-year deal to return to the Detroit Lions for what will be his 12th season in the NFL.

Mathis, 33, won a starting job last season when some of the Lions' younger cornerbacks were injured and didn't develop as fast as expected.

He became an unrestricted free agent during the offseason. It appeared he might not come back to Detroit when he wasn't signed sooner, but his agent Doug Hendrickson confirmed the deal with the Lions through a message posted on Twitter.

The Lions, meanwhile, announced that they claimed defensive end Kourtnei Brown (6-foot-4, 253 pounds) off waivers from the Buffalo Bills after he passed his physical.

Brown, who went undrafted coming out of Clemson in 2012, will compete for a backup job on the defensive line.

Brown, 25, also spent time on the Washington Redskins' practice squad, but he's never played in an NFL game.
