CLEVELAND – The Cavaliers have traded point guard Ramon Sessions and swingman Christian Eyenga to the Los Angeles Lakers for a 2012 first-round draft pick and forwards Luke Walton and Jason Kapono, according to sources on both sides.
The Lakers also receive the right to swap their 2013 first-round pick with the one the Cavs’ acquired from Miami.
The trade had been in works for weeks, says a source familiar with the situation. However, the Lakers’ hesitancy to surrender a first-round pick delayed the deal. When they finally relented, the sides needed to match salaries to make it happen, which is why Walton, Kapono and Eyenga were included in the deal.
Sessions, 25, is averaging 10.5 points and 5.1 assists. While the Cavs hated trading him, they also knew it would be difficult to find the long-term minutes he is seeking while playing behind rookie Kyrie Irving. Sessions can opt out of his contract at the end of the season, which was another consideration.
Eyenga, 22, has appeared in just six games for the Cavs this season and is averaging 1.5 points per game.
