LOS ANGELES -- World champion sprinter Carmelita Jeter, who lays claim as the “Fastest Woman Alive” by winning the gold medal in the 100 meter race at the 2011 IAAF World Track and Field Championships, will be presented with the prestigious Sportswoman of the Year award during the seventh annual LA Sports Awards, presented by AT&T U-verse on March 15 at Club Nokia at L.A. Live.

The LA Sports Awards are presented by the Los Angeles Sports Council to celebrate the greatest moments of the year in sports in the Los Angeles/Orange County area.

The Sportswoman award is given to the local female athlete whose performance and character best exemplified the ideals of sportsmanship during the calendar year.

Jeter (rhymes with "better"), a Los Angeles native, starred at the World Championships in Daegu, South Korea, winning two gold medals. She took first in the 100m and also anchored the gold medal-winning 4 x 100m relay team.

Her exceptional 2011 track season made her the recipient of the Jesse Owens Award -- the highest accolade in the sport -- given by USA Track & Field to the outstanding U.S. female track and field athlete. Nicknamed “The Jet,” the 32-year-old sprinter is favored to win the gold medal in the 100m race at this summer’s London Olympics.

Jeter is also a volunteer with Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the global leader in the fight against breast cancer.

The star-studded awards dinner and gala will be televised by FOX Sports West (air dates TBA) and will include special appearances by many of the athletes and coaches whose achievements helped make 2011 such a memorable year in sports.
