ST. LOUIS -- It seems to be working. John Mozeliak keeps finding and signing good players, and the St. Louis Cardinals keep winning.
So it was no surprise Saturday when the Cardinals announced that Mozeliak, the club's senior vice president and general manager, has agreed to a two-year contract extension with the team through the 2018 season.
"Over the last six seasons, Mo has done an outstanding job leading our baseball operations," Cardinals Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. said in a press release. "By extending Mo's contract with the club, we look forward to continuing our approach, which emphasizes excellence at the major-league level, supported by a strong player procurement and player development program."
Mozeliak, 45, has been with the club for 19 years and has served as the team's general manager the last six (2008-13). With Mozeliak as GM the Cardinals have won two National League pennants and one World Series while making the playoffs four times. Attesting to the club's organizational strength and success in scouting and player development are two awards from Baseball America as baseball's Organization of the Year (2011 and 2013).
The 2011 honoree as MLB.com's Executive of the Year, Mozeliak has overseen a rich minor-league organization while locking up core players Matt Holliday, Yadier Molina, Adam Wainwright, Allen Craig and Matt Carpenter with long-term agreements at the big-league level.
"I look forward to continuing my relationship with this great franchise as we try to bring another championship to our fans and city," Mozeliak said in the release.
