Cardinals set roster for Friday's game

ATLANTA – The Cardinals have decided to go with 10 pitchers and 15 position players on their roster for Friday’s one-game playoff against the Atlanta Braves.

Starters Chris Carpenter, Adam Wainwright and Jaime Garcia won’t be on the roster since they wouldn’t have pitched anyway. Instead the Cardinals have added a few extra relievers and tactical options off their bench.

Teams can set a specific 25-man roster for the wild card game and then change it again should they win and advance to the Division Series.

“This is kind of unprecedented how to go about this one game series,” manager Mike Matheny said.  “But we have the ability to add some depth to our bench in case we do need to put some players in late.  As far as the pitching goes, our bullpen has been pretty established.  To be able to add another arm like a (Lance) Lynn out of the starting rotation really makes a lot of sense, without putting any of the other guys on shorter rest in situations that we probably wouldn't use them in anyhow.  So it really kind of defined itself.”

Here is the 25-man roster the Cardinals will use Friday, announced minutes ago by Matheny:

Position Players: Yadier Molina, Tony Cruz, Bryan Anderson, Allen Craig, Dan Descalso, Skip Schumaker, Pete Kozma, Ryan Jackson, David Freese, Matt Carpenter, Matt Holliday, Carlos Beltran, Jon Jay, Shane Robinson, Adron Chambers.

Pitchers: Kyle Lohse, Lance Lynn, Jason Motte, Mitchell Boggs, Edward Mujica, Joe Kelly, Fernando Salas, Trevor Rosenthal, Marc Rzepczynski (LHP) and Sam Freeman (LHP).
