Cardinals cut Doucet, tender offer to Hoyer

The Cardinals cut receiver Early Doucet on Saturday. The move saves the team about $1.7 million in cap space.

Doucet has been in Arizona since the Cards drafted him in the third round in the 2008 draft, with his biggest season coming in 2011, when he caught 54 passes for 689 yards and five touchdowns.

The move is not surprising given that Doucet has been plagued by injuries and inconsistency for most of his career. The 2011 season was the only one in which he played more than 12 games, and he played 10 or fewer in each of his first three seasons.

With veterans Larry Fitzgerald and Andre Roberts in the fold as well as 2012 first-round pick Michael Floyd, the Cards appear set at the position, at least for the money Doucet would be making as a No. 4 receiver.

The Cardinals also tendered a one-year contract offer to quarterback Brian Hoyer on Saturday.

As a restricted free agent, Hoyer can negotiate with other teams until April 19, but the Cardinals have the right to match any offer he receives. Hoyer was given a second-round tender, meaning if another team extends an offer and the Cardinals decline to match, they will receive a second-round draft pick as compensation.

Hoyer played in two games late last year for the Cardinals after being signed as a free agent. While his numbers weren't overly impressive -- he was 30 of 53 with a touchdown and two interceptions -- the dearth of quality free agents on the market has led to discussion as Hoyer as an option for teams in need of a veteran quarterback.

The Cardinals are not expected to bring back Week 1 starter John Skelton, who did not dress late in the year while Hoyer and rookie Ryan Lindley were given looks, and the future of starter Kevin Kolb is unclear given his injury history and exorbitant contract.
