GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Paul Konerko hit his fifth home run of spring training and Chris Sale pitched into the sixth inning in his first start since signing a big contract, leading the Chicago White Sox over the Colorado Rockies 3-1 Monday.
Konerko homered leading off the second against Drew Pomeranz, who struck out the side in the first.
Sale gave up one hit and faced the minimum 15 batters through five innings. Yorvit Torrealba homered leading off the sixth and Tyler Colvin singled, chasing Sale. The 23-year-old left-hander, making his second exhibition start, agreed Thursday to a $32.5 million, five-year deal.
BREWERS 3, DODGERS 2
PHOENIX -- Rickie Weeks had an RBI
triple off Hyun-Jim Ryu after Zack Greinke was scratched from his start
Monday because of elbow inflammation, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the
Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2.
The Dodgers said Greinke was examined
by Dr. Neal ElAttrache and that an MRI in Arizona last week showed no
structural damage. The 2009 AL Cy Young Award winner, signed to a $147
million, six-year contract in December as a free agent, received an
injection of platelet-rich plasma and anti-inflammatory medication. The
Dodgers said the right-hander will rest for two to three days and then
go on a progressive throwing program.
Mike Fiers pitched out of
jams in the second and third innings for Milwaukee. Fiers allowed two
unearned runs in four innings, while giving up six hits.
GIANTS 2, RANGERS 1
SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Hunter Pence doubled, tripled and drove in both runs Monday in the San Francisco Giants' 2-1 victory over the Texas Rangers.
Madison Bumgarner allowed a hit and a walk in four scoreless innings, his longest outing of spring training. Bumgarner struck out four and retired his final eight batters.
After Kensuke Tanaka and Tony Abreu reached on infield singles in the third against Yu Darvish, Pence followed with an RBI double down the right-field line. Nick Noonan and Pence hit consecutive triples in the fifth off closer Joe Nathan.
For Texas, Mitch Moreland doubled in the fifth and scored on Mike Olt's groundout.
Darvish struck out five in 3 2-3 innings, allowing five hits and walking none.
ANGELS 0, INDIANS 0
GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Daisuke Matsuzaka left his outing Monday because of a cramp in his right calf, overshadowing a fine performance by Scott Kazmir as the Cleveland Indians played to a 0-0 tie with Jered Weaver and the Los Angeles Angels.
Attempting a comeback after having elbow-reconstruction surgery in 2011 and a disastrous final season with Boston, the 32-year-old Matsuzaka allowed one hit in one inning before cramping during warmups for his second inning in his fourth spring appearance for Cleveland.
The Angels' Weaver allowed three hits and two walks over four innings. He struck out six. Weaver allowed one run in three innings in a start against Team Italy on March 6.
Kazmir, Weaver's friend and former teammate, extended his spring scoreless string to 11 innings with four sharp innings for the Indians.
PADRES 10, ATHLETICS 0
PEORIA, Ariz. -- Tyson Ross pitched two-hit ball in his second straight scoreless outing, and Yonder Alonso hit one of the San Diego Padres' three homers in a 10-0 romp over The Oakland Athletics on Monday.
Second baseman Jonathan Galvez and left fielder Travis Buck also homered for San Diego, which roughed up Oakland starter Jarrod Parker for five runs. Parker gave up six hits and struck out two in four innings.
Ross, the former Oakland Athletics pitcher, walked one in three innings and struck out three.
Padres closer Huston Street pitched a scoreless sixth inning in his third appearance of the spring.
CUBS 7, DIAMONDBACKS 5
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Jeff Samardzija homered and allowed four runs over 4 2-3 innings Monday in the Chicago Cubs' 7-5 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-5.
Samardzija, prepping for an opening-day start at Pittsburgh on April 1, gave up four hits and two walks and struck out two. He hit a solo homer to center in the fifth against Eury De la Rosa that pulled the Cubs to 3-2.
Wellington Castillo tied the score 4-4 with a two-run homer off David Holmberg in the sixth, and Darwin Barney gave the Cubs a 6-4 lead with a two-run double against Holmberg in the seventh.
Adam Eaton hit a two-run homer in the third and is batting .400 (16 for 40).
Arizona starter Trevor Cahill allowed one run and three hits in four innings, walked none and struck out five, fanning the side in the second.
