ATHLETICS 4, GIANTS 3
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Yoenis
Cespedes hit a three-run home run and the Oakland Athletics held on to
beat the San Francisco Giants 4-3 on Saturday in the final tuneup for
both teams.
Coco Crisp added two hits and scored twice, and Dan
Straily pitched five scoreless innings for his first win since early in
spring training.
Marco Scutaro had two hits for San Francisco,
which played without third baseman Pablo Sandoval. The All-Star third
baseman has been bothered by a sore right elbow.
ANGELS 2, DODGERS 1
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Hank Conger pinch hit for Josh Hamilton and smacked a two-out homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Los Angeles Angels a 2-1 victory over the Dodgers on Saturday night in the teams' final exhibition game.
The teams agreed to end the game after nine innings if the game was tied. Yimi Garcia struck out his first two batters before Conger drove a 1-0 pitch a few rows into the right-field seats. It was his fourth homer of the spring and team-high 16th RBI.
Tommy Hanson gave up a run and three hits in 6 1-3 innings and struck out six in his fifth start this spring, finishing 0-2 with a 5.89 ERA.
Dodgers starter Zack Greinke threw 81 pitches over five innings, allowing a run and three hits with five strikeouts in his fourth spring start.
BREWERS 5, WHITE SOX 4
MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Rickie Weeks hit a two-run homer in the first inning and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago White Sox 5-4 Saturday in the final spring training game for both teams.
White Sox starter Dylan Axelrod came on in relief and threw 5 1/3 scoreless innings before tiring in the eighth. Axelrod, scheduled to start Friday against Seattle, was pulled after RBI doubles by Jonathan Lucroy and Sean Halton.
Logan Schafer's run-scoring single off Matt Zaleski put Milwaukee ahead.
Adam Dunn hit a solo homer in the fourth for the White Sox.
Chicago scratched out three runs, one earned, against Tom Gorzelanny in the fifth. Throwing errors put runners in scoring position for Gordon Beckham and Dewayne Wise, who each drove in a run. Brandon Short added an RBI double.
RANGERS 5, PADRES 2
SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- Someone finally took advantage of the short right-field wall at the Alamodome when Leury Garcia lined a three-run homer over the 285-foot sign to lead the Texas Rangers past the San Diego Padres 5-2 on Saturday.
The Rangers swept both games played in the Alamodome, which is designed primarily for football and special events such as the NCAA Final Four but had not hosted baseball until this weekend.
A crowd of 40,569 pushed San Antonio's two-day total to 75,210.
Texas opens the regular season Sunday night in Houston against a new AL West rival in the Astros. San Diego travels to New York to face the Mets on Monday.
INDIANS 9, REDS 1
GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) -- Carlos Santana homered and doubled off Cincinnati starter Armando Galarraga on Saturday, leading the Cleveland Indians to a 9-1 victory over a Reds split squad in the final spring training game for both teams.
Santana hit his second home run of the spring in the fourth, a solo shot. Mark Reynolds, a free agent signed to DH, walked and scored on a single by Matt Carson.
Carson hit his fifth home run of the spring with a runner on in the fifth inning against Cincinnati's Jose Diaz.
Brett Myers pitched five innings for Cleveland, allowing one run and three hits. He struck out three.
The Reds played their minor leaguers. Galarraga, who will start the season at Triple-A Louisville, allowed two runs on five hits and four walks in four innings.
MARINERS 4, ROCKIES 3
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Kendrys Morales and Justin Smoak homered and the Seattle Mariners beat the Colorado Rockies 4-3 Saturday in their final spring tuneup
Morales, who played for the Los Angeles Angels' Triple-A affiliate in Salt Lake City from 2006-2008, ripped a fastball over the left center fence in the top of the fourth inning and Smoak went deep in the fifth to help the Mariners finish with the best spring training record in team history at 22-11.
Troy Tulowitzki and Todd Helton both hit solo home runs to chase Brandon Maurer, who is slated to be Seattle's fourth starter. The Rockies had the bases loaded in the eighth after Jordan Ribera's single scored David Kandilas and trimmed the lead to a run before Raul Ibanez caught Jonathan Herrera's line drive to end the inning.
REDS 9, DIAMONDBACKS 0
PHOENIX (AP) -- Homer Bailey threw six innings of one-hit ball and a Cincinnati Reds split squad beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-0 on Saturday.
Bailey struck out seven, walked one and retired his final 10 hitters. Cliff Pennington's one-out single in the third was the only hit against the right-hander, and Gerardo Parra drew the lone walk two batters later.
Bailey also singled and scored during Cincinnati's three-run third inning. Four consecutive batters reached base with two outs against Arizona starter Wade Miley, including Joey Votto, who doubled home Bailey for the game's first run.
Miley also went six innings, giving up four runs and nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Two of the Reds' four runs in the ninth came against D-backs reliever Heath Bell, who has allowed six earned runs in his past three outings covering 2 2/3 innings.
ASTROS 6, CUBS 3
HOUSTON (AP) -- Houston's prospects got the best of the Chicago Cubs on Saturday.
Playing
a lineup of mostly minor leaguers in their last exhibition game, the
Astros beat the Cubs 6-3. The Cubs began the game with most of their
regular starters.
Houston right fielder Domingo Santana was a
home run shy of the cycle and drove in two runs. Astros shortstop,
18-year-old Carlos Correa, the top overall pick in the 2012 draft, went 3
for 4 with a sacrifice fly.
Cubs starter Travis Wood yielded
five hits and two runs with a spring-best seven strikeouts in 4 1/3
innings. It was an improvement from his last start when he allowed seven
hits and four runs in four innings.
Chicago began taking out its starters in the third inning.
