Miguel Cabrera has become the first player to win the Tiger of the Year award four times.

Cabrera got 17 out of 25 first-place votes in balloting done by the Detroit chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America to win for the second straight year and the fourth time since 2008.

In the past six years, only Justin Verlander (2009 and 2011) has broken Cabrera's grip on the award.

Cabrera won his third straight American League batting title, hitting .348, and led the league in both on-base percentage (.442) and slugging percentage (.636).

A groin injury in September derailed his attempt to become the first major-leaguer to win back-to-back Triple Crowns -- his 44 homers and 137 RBIs were both second to Baltimore's Chris Davis -- but he's the overwhelming favorite to pick up a second AL MVP award on Thursday.

Alan Trammell (1980, 1987-88) and Cecil Fielder (1990-92) are the only other three-time winners since the award was first given in 1965.

Max Scherzer, the expected AL Cy Young winner, picked up the other eight votes.
