Buehrle goes for first victory as a Marlin

Tune into FOX Sports Florida at 6:30 p.m. to watch the Miami Marlins take on the Chicago Cubs.

Before he chose to follow Ozzie Guillen to the Miami Marlins, Mark Buehrle built a reputation as a consistent winner.

He's still seeking his first victory with his new team.

Buehrle will try to earn that win against a familiar opponent, the Chicago Cubs, when he makes his first home start with the Marlins on Wednesday night.

After 12 seasons with the White Sox, Buehrle signed with Miami in December, three months after Guillen agreed to leave Chicago and lead the Marlins. The left-hander won at least 10 games in 11 consecutive campaigns for his former club, but a lack of run support has played a large part in keeping him winless this season.

Buehrle (0-2, 3.65 ERA) has been given a combined one run in his two starts, and he lost 3-1 in Philadelphia on Thursday. Two of the three runs he allowed over 6 1-3 innings came via solo homers.

"I was making good pitches," he said. "They just hit the ball hard and a few got in there. But I threw well, and I thought my location was there."

Buehrle will try to bounce back by winning his third consecutive decision over the Cubs (3-8). He has a 1.82 ERA over his last four starts versus Chicago and did not get a decision during last season's only matchup after allowing two runs and five hits over 5 1-3 innings.

Judging by his teammates' recent performances at Marlins Park, Buehrle might get the support he needs Wednesday.

Miami (5-6) is batting .275 with 19 runs during its last four home games after hitting .235 and scoring 27 times during its first eight there. Hanley Ramirez provided the tiebreaking three-run homer in a 5-2 victory Tuesday, which gave the Marlins consecutive wins at their new stadium for the first time.

The victory also marked the return of Guillen from a much-publicized, five-game suspension for praising Fidel Castro, which angered his new city's large contingent of former Cubans. Heath Bell also earned his first save for the Marlins after a pair of rough outings among his first four appearances.

"Obviously talking about some issues is not my business," Guillen said. "My business is to talk about baseball. ... I learned a very tough lesson. You learn from mistakes. I hope this mistake makes me a better person."

Matt Garza (1-0, 1.23) will try to prevent Guillen's team from winning a season-best third in a row while helping the Cubs avoid a season-high fourth consecutive defeat.

The right-hander nearly recorded a shutout Thursday but was on the bench for the final out of an 8-0 win over Milwaukee. Garza yielded three hits and two walks while striking out nine but was pulled when his throw to first on the potential final out went into the stands.

"When I start something, I intend to finish. I was one out away," Garza said. "We won. That's the plus side."

During his first season in the NL, Garza pitched seven scoreless innings in his only start against the Marlins on July 14, but Carlos Marmol gave up five runs in the ninth of a 6-3 defeat.

Garza is 3-1 with a 3.90 ERA in five starts against Florida but was tagged for seven runs over 1 1-3 innings during his previous start in Miami on June 18, 2010, while with Tampa Bay.
