TAMPA, Fla. -- Dashon Goldson's hit on New York Jets tight end Jeff Cumberland proved costly.
Goldson, a Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety, was fined $30,000 for hitting a defenseless receiver Sunday in the second quarter of the Jets' 18-17 victory at MetLife Stadium, the league announced Friday.
The league ruled that Goldson unnecessarily struck Cumberland in the head and neck area. Goldson received a personal foul on the play.
After the hit, Cumberland had to leave the game briefly and received stitches on his chin.
"I don't want penalties, nor do I want fines," Bucs coach Greg Schiano said Friday. "I want us to play the games within the rules. I respect the game of football. Does it affect receivers? I think, if you're human, it does. Nobody wants to get crocked. ... Sometimes, when you're moving at high speeds, illegal acts occur. So, we just keep working at it. We'll get it right. Every once in a while, you're going to have one. That's the nature of the game."
