To address their need at point guard, the Milwaukee Bucks have signed guard Jorge Gutierrez to a 10-day contract.
Gutierrez fills the roster spot of center Larry Sanders, who has served five games of his 10-game suspension for violating the league's drug policy.
The NBA allows teams to replace suspended players after five of the 10 games. Milwaukee will need to clear a roster spot once Sanders is deemed to have met the requirements of his treatment program.
Gutierrez joins the Bucks from the Canton Charge of the NBA's Developmental League, where he averaged 15.2 points, 6.0 assists and 5.0 rebounds over six games.
The 26-year-old began the season with the Brooklyn Nets, averaging 1.6 points in 10 games before being traded to Philadelphia on Dec. 11. He was then waived by the 76ers on Dec. 12.
Gutierrez played collegiately at the University of California, earning Pac-12 Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors following his senior season of 2011-12. He went undrafted and began his professional career with Canton in the D-League.
Bucks coach Jason Kidd is familiar with the 6-foot-3 point guard, as Gutierrez signed with the Brooklyn Nets last March to become just the fourth Mexican-born player to play in the NBA.
In 15 games with the Nets last season, Gutierrez averaged 4.1 points, 1.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists.
The Bucks also have a decision to make on power forward Kenyon Martin, as his second 10-day contract expires Wednesday. Milwaukee is expected to sign the veteran for the remainder of the season.
