TAMPA, Fla. -- Josh Freeman’s spiral continues.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers declared the quarterback inactive before their game against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday at Raymond James Stadium. On Friday, coach Greg Schiano alluded the move was possible, when he declined to confirm that the five-year veteran was the team’s No. 2 quarterback after rookie Mike Glennon was named the starter Wednesday.
"Ninety minutes before, I'm going to name our actives and inactives," Schiano said Friday, when asked about Freeman’s status. "That's how we're going to go."
Freeman’s absence caps a tumultuous week for the former No. 17 overall pick. He was benched after he began 43-of-94 passing with 571 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions in three starts. Originally, he was named the team’s No. 2 quarterback, but Schiano’s tone changed after Freeman was part of an unauthorized interview with ESPN on Thursday in which the player suggested a trade would be the best option for him.
Meanwhile, wide receivers Vincent Jackson (ribs) and Mike Williams (hamstring) are active after missing practices Wednesday and Thursday. Both were listed as questionable after limited participation Friday.
Cornerbacks Michael Adams and Rashaan Melvin, defensive end Trevor Scott, guard/tackle Gabe Carimi, tight end Tom Crabtree and defensive tackle Derek Landri are inactive for the Buccaneers.
