Browns notebook: Wrapping up Haslam interview

While the potential problems for Browns GM Ray Farmer and the status of quarterback Johnny Manziel made most of the headlines, Cleveland owner Jimmy Haslam touched on several other issues during his meeting with local beat writers Wednesday.
Here is a rundown of some of the other topics that were discussed:
Q: What is president Alec Scheiner's role?:
Haslam: "Alec is in charge of the business side of the franchise. I think he's one of the top guys in pro sports. We feel very fortunate to have him on our side. Also he's in charge of our community efforts. That's his main job with us. But as part of my learning curve -- and I do this in our regular business -- a lot of the things we do rather than have two smart people in the room, we'll have four or five smart people in the room when we go to make decisions and set strategy. Alec and Sash participate in that... They're quite to say they're not football guys, but they've been in the league 10 or 12 years at different franchises. They've seen what those franchises do, good and bad, and they're very good smart, strategic thinkers who I'm proud to have on our team and who add value. The business and football side get along well here despite what's been depicted."
Q: What do you do with Pro Bowl wide receiver Josh Gordon?
Haslam: "Let me say this. We have the responsibility, ownership and management, to take great care of our players and get the most out of them. We spent a tremendous amount of time on Josh. Everybody in the organization and at a certain point in time an individual has to take care of themselves and do what's right -- not just for themselves. I said this after the Ravens game but for the team, the coaches, the people in the building, the fans. Josh has failed to accept that responsibility. I hope he can get his life together, he's immensely gifted. He's obviously going to be away from football for a year so he's not going to be in the building so for at least a year we've moved on from Josh. I wish him well. I hope he can get his act together because he's a very gifted athlete.
Q: Why not cut Josh when you and coaches preach accountability?
Haslam: "That's a decision that we will need to look at make a certain point in time. He's out for a year so there's no huge hurry. We'll address that at the proper time."
Q: What do you say about the report Pro Bowl tight end Jordan Cameron doesn't want to be here?:
Haslam: "Let me just say that I don't think that's accurate. OK? I'll just leave it at that. We've got several free agents, really good people, really good players that we're going through that process with right now.
Q: Do you think you'll be big players in free agency with a lot of room under the cap?:
Haslam: "I think you'll see us playing less in free agency."
Q: Will you move training camp this year?
Haslam:"I don't think those decisions have been made yet. It's well known and reported that we have been talking to Columbus about potentially moving down there in a couple years, but nothing has been finalized. Training camp will be here in Berea. Might we have a family day like we did in Akron last year, which was hugely successful, somewhere else? Maybe. That's not been finalized yet.
"The logistics of all that are substantial. It takes a while to plan and get everything in place. The No. 1 thing we want to make sure we do is provide for the welfare and safety of our players and give them a great place not just to practice but to train, etc. We'll move very slowly on that."
Q: Why did you let Kyle Shanahan out of his contract?
Haslam: "You know, you'd have to ask Kyle that. OK? Kyle talked to (head coach Mike Pettine). Let's see, we played the Ravens on what was it, the 28th? Sunday night the fourth, Pett and I had a long talk. Kyle wanted to talk to me. He came in the next day. We had a very professional 30-minute conversation. Kyle asked to be allowed out of his contract. We let him out of his contract."
