Browns add QB Thigpen following injuries to Manziel, Hoyer

BEREA, Ohio -- Injuries to quarterbacks Johhny Manziel and Brian Hoyer have led to the Cleveland Browns adding veteran Tyler Thigpen to the roster and probably starting undrafted rookie Connor Shaw in Sunday's season finale.
Hoyer's shoulder injury will keep him out of practice Tuesday, and Browns coach Mike Pettine said Shaw would take all the reps. Pettine said the team has made no decision on a starter for Sunday's season finale in Baltimore.
Shaw is not on the active roster. He's been on the practice squad all season.
Thigpen was signed Tuesday, and Shaw figures to be promoted from the practice squad. Pettine said Manziel Monday is out for that game with a hamstring injury and Hoyer is questionable with a shoulder injury suffered last Sunday in Carolina after he replaced Manziel.
If Shaw starts it will be three straight seasons -- with three different head coaches -- that the Browns had to play at least three quarterbacks. Pettine said he's not sure if Hoyer can be healthy enough to play by the end of the week.
Thigpen was with the Browns through early August, then was cut in favor of veteran Rex Grossman. The Browns kept Grossman through training camp before cutting him, and he turned down a chance to return this week.
Thigpen completed 3-of-12 attempts for 38 yards and one interception in one preseason appearance with the Browns. Thigpen, 30, is originally a seventh-round pick out of Coastal Carolina. He was arrested last month in South Carolina for DUI but awaits trial.
Pettine said the Browns "understand the seriousness of Tyler's situation" in regard to the DUI charge but said the team had to find a quarterback on short notice. The Browns will practice Tuesday and Wednesday and be off Thursday for Christmas.
Shaw has spent the entire season on the practice squad. Hoyer started the season's first 13 games and Manziel started the last two.
The Browns cut fullback Ray Agnew to make room on the roster for Thigpen. When Shaw is promoted, the team has the option to place Manziel on injured-reserve.
