MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez is back in the lineup Tuesday after missing a pair of games with a variety of injuries.
Gomez had an elbow injury flare up of late, but pain in both of his thumbs could be the most painful of the multitude of injuries he's currently dealing with.
One thumb was injured diving on a stolen base while Gomez hurt the other getting jammed on a pitch. Roenicke feels the injuries have contributed to a slide that's seen Gomez's batting average fall to .292.
"I think that's what started the slide," Roenicke said. "Now how bad that is every day, I don't know. Usually a slump starts because of a minor injury. You make changes and do things you don't normally do, and you are in a slump."
Ramirez takes step: Brewers third baseman Aramis Ramirez took batting practice on the field Tuesday for the first time since going on the disabled list July 8 with left knee pain.
Ramirez's return to the lineup is still days away, but hitting on the field is a significant step in the right direction.
"I'm hoping that by the end of the road trip he's doing enough things that we have a chance to get him," Roenicke said. "I don't know how fast it's going to come along once he's running. He needs to get that first step on defense also. Those were the tough things for him to do."
Davis ready to contribute: Khris Davis was completely oblivious to what was going on in Milwaukee on Monday.
Going through his usual pre game routine Monday, Davis had his headphones on listening to music and didn't find out Ryan Braun was suspended until after the game.
After hitting the game-winning, three-run home run in Triple-A Nashville's 6-5 victory over Albuquerque, Davis was told he was coming back up to the Brewers.
"I'm just here to help them win," Davis said. "I'll help the team do whatever to win."
Davis is hitting .176 in 17 at-bats over two different stints with the big league club. The 25-year-old made the team out of spring training, but was sent back down May 1 when playing time was scarce.
He was recalled for the four-game series in Arizona prior to the All-Star break when Braun went on the bereavement list and was sent back down when Braun was activated last Friday. Davis was hitting .255 with 13 home runs and 37 RBI in Triple A when he was called up Monday night.
"I'm just here to play ball and be ready," Davis said.
