Brewers Sunday: Carlos Gomez, Ryan Braun out of lineup

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez didn't get the day off Sunday because of the slump he's in at the plate, but the All-Star is battling another injury.

Gomez is out of the lineup for Sunday's series finale against Miami with a sore right elbow, adding to the nagging left shoulder and thumb injuries he's battled over the past few weeks.

The right elbow has bothered Gomez before, but it flared up in Saturday's 6-0 victory over the Marlins.

Mired in a 3-for-39 slump at the plate that has dropped his batting average from .319 to .292, Gomez has chased pitches he often laid off in the first half of the season. Brewers manager Ron Roenicke thinks the injuries have a lot to do with the slump at the plate.

"That's from the hand and the elbow not feeling right," Roenicke said. "I'm hoping one day is enough. We'll see how he responds to it tomorrow."

Braun sits: Still working his way back after missing over a month with an irritated nerve in his right and a trip to the bereavement list to tend to a family matter, Brewers left fielder Ryan Braun is out of the lineup Sunday after starting Friday and Saturday.

Braun played all nine innings Saturday for the first time since his return and showcased some good and some struggle at the plate. Braun doubled in a pair of runs in the first inning to give him his first multiple RBI game since May 26, but he also struck out twice and grounded out to the pitcher.

"I thought going nine yesterday was good," Roenicke said. "We'll see how the legs are. I know we always talk about when you are off a long time. You can practice all you want, but it's just like going to spring training. You come into spring training and you are sore again no matter what you do."

The Brewers considered sending Braun to get at-bats with the rookie ball team in Arizona, but any thought of a rehab assignment changed when Aramis Ramirez had to go on the disabled list before the All-Star break.

"He's lost a little bit right now. He's still such a good hitter where if they get it in that one zone he's going to hit it well. He'll get better as the at-bats go on and start recognizing pitches now. You see the fastball but you have to be able to be confident you can get to that and still see spin on the ball with the off-speed pitch."
