The Milwaukee Brewers have suffered a few spring training injuries to some of the biggest names on the roster.
The team announced Saturday that starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo will be scratched from his scheduled start Sunday with a strained groin. Left fielder Ryan Braun missed Saturday's game, and third baseman Aramis Ramirez left Saturday's game.
Braun fouled a pitch off his left knee Thursday, but Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said prior to Saturday's game that the injury was just a bruise and didn't seem concerned with its severity. Ramirez doubled down the line in the third inning of Saturday's game against the Angels but came up lame on his way to the dugout. He is day-to-day with a strained left knee.
The most concerning injury might be Gallardo – simply because he's set to depart for the World Baseball Classic. Roenicke, who was apprehensive about his ace pitching in the tournament to begin with, wants to make sure he's healthy before pitching in a more intense environment.
"We're going to be cautious with him," Roenicke told reporters before Saturday's game. "We need to test to make sure he's 100 percent before he goes to the Classic. If he's not ready, then no he will not pitch."
Roenicke told reporters that Gallardo will throw a bullpen session on Sunday, and if that goes well he'll pitch an inning in Milwaukee's exhibition game against Canada on Tuesday. The Brewers and Gallardo will then make a decision about the World Baseball Classic after Tuesday's outing.
