Following Wednesday night's 2-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Milwaukee Brewers recalled second baseman Scooter Gennett from Triple-A Colorado Springs. To clear room on the roster, right-hander David Goforth was optioned to the Sky Sox.
Gennett hit .307 with two home runs and 12 RBI in 21 games with Colorado Springs, including a .365 batting average in 32 at-bats against left-handed pitchers.
The Brewers have struggled to get production from second basemen all season. Milwaukee's Opening Day starter, Gennett was batting just .154 with one extra-base hit when he was optioned to Triple-A on May 18.
Hector Gomez, Elian Herrera, Luis Sardiñas and Hernan Perez have all started games at second base since Gennett's demotion, but Milwaukee's second basemen are hitting just .143 with one RBI over 16 games in June.
Brewers' second basemen are last in the majors with a .178 batting average and a .218 on-base percentage.
Milwaukee optioned Sardinas to Triple-A on Tuesday, while Herrera was designated for assignment when Perez was claimed off waivers from the Detroit Tigers on June 2.
Goforth pitched just 2 1/3 innings over four appearances during his two-and-a-half weeks with the Brewers. He last pitched May 31 and hasn't appeared in Milwaukee's last nine games.
The Brewers will be back at full strength in their bullpen Thursday when left-hander Will Smith is reinstated after serving a six-game suspension.
