ATLANTA -- The Braves designated relief pitcher Juan Jaime for assignment on Monday and added Sugar Ray Marimon to the 25-man roster as a corresponding move, manager Fredi Gonzalez announced prior to Atlanta's game against the Miami Marlins.
Jaime walked two batters to start the eighth inning in Sunday's loss to the Mets and then intentionally walked another to load the bases after a sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position. In two appearances covering 1 1/3 innings this season, Jaime walked batters and gave up an earned run.
Gonzalez noted that it wasn't just one bad outing that sealed Jaime's fate.
"It's not like it's one outing or two outings," said Gonzalez. "I don't want guys to think you have one bad outing and you get shipped out. It's been a long-term [problem with Jaime].
In 18 big-league games between last season and his first two outings of 2015, Jaime posted a 5.93 ERA with 19 strikeouts and 14 walks (one intentional) in 13 2/3 innings. Jaime has a nasty fastball, but major control issues.
The Braves plan to use Marimon as an innings eater at the front of the bullpen.
"We felt like he could throw the ball over the plate and kind of be a long guy, and then use Cody [Martin] in more significant innings," said Gonzalez. "Maybe we can use [Martin] in that bridge to the seventh and not have to worry about burning a long guy."
Marimon threw three innings last Thursday for Triple-A Gwinnett and struck out two batters. He didn't allow a hit, and didn't walk anyone.
